Description

Exquisite glazed ceramic roof tile figurine from the late 19th century Qing Dynasty in China. This piece boasts vibrant and brilliant colors, showcasing remarkable preservation. According to Chinese tradition, roof tiles serve as a bridge between the earthly and spiritual realms. They are used to ward off evil and attract good fortune and blessings. This is an original antique tile like the ones found all over roofs of that region of China, depicting a warrior riding a fenghuang, the mythical bird symbolizing grace and virtue. The pair is captured in flight with intricate details in the warrior's attire and the feathers and anatomy of the fenghuang. Mounted on a wooden base, this piece was part of the private collection of the late Cemex CEO, Lorenzo Zambrano Treviño.
