Description

Carvers from Puebla were renowned in the 18th century for their divine representations in wood carving, infusing each creation with spiritual significance and unmatched craftsmanship. This sculpture bears the style that was popular in the central region of Mexico of this time, making her provenance likely from a workshop close to Puebla or Mexico City. This area has a rich history of Santo production, dating back to the early colonial period. Talented artisans, imbued with both European and indigenous artistic influences, carved these statues from wood and then adorned them with meticulous techniques.

Expert hands have shaped this devotional figure from wood, employing revered techniques such as polychrome, estofado and encarnado. This particular statue is a magnificent example of these techniques. Polychrome refers to the application of multiple color paint layers to a sculpture. Estofado is a special technique where gold leaf is laid beneath a solid color (usually red) and then complex designs are carved lightly into the painted surface and polished to create an ethereal, gleaming finish. The artist has also employed encarnado, a technique used to create realistic skin tones. The Virgin's eyes are made of glass, which instill a lifelike presence, inviting onlookers into a moment of contemplation and reverence. Topping this magnificent piece is a beautiful sterling silver crown, adding to her majesty and prestige. This crown is a testament to the devotion the original owner felt for the Virgin Mary.

This exquisite Santo is a rare find. Antique Santos of this quality and artistry are becoming increasingly scarce. Owning this piece is a chance to connect with the deep faith and artistic heritage of Mexico.
