Description

This incredible piece is a vintage oil painting on Masonite board, signed by Marisa Mosqueda. The painting depicts a heartwarming scene in which a shepherd dog has found a lost lamb from the flock amidst a winter snowstorm. He raises his head to call his master and simultaneously protects the poor freezing lamb from the crows gathering on the left side. This painting is originally by Walter Hunt and is sometimes titled "Found" or "The Shepherd's Call." It is set in an original carved wood and gilded frame, adding a touch of authenticity and elegance.

Artist Walter Hunt was the son of Charles Hunt, a genre artist known for paintings of everyday scenes. Both Walter and his brother Edgar were well-known for their paintings of animals. Walter was best known for his paintings of farmyard scenes. Walter Hunt resided in the Wandsworth district of South West London, England, and began exhibiting his works at the Royal Academy in 1881 when he was twenty years old. Today, we might refer to this as an old-fashioned type of Collie. Sheltie (Shetland Sheepdog) enthusiasts also recognize their beloved breed in this dog, as do Border Collie and English Shepherd enthusiasts. Strictly speaking, the "Found" dog isn't any of these breeds, yet it is all of them; it comes from a time when the lines between breeds were less distinct, when the name "collie" wasn't so much a breed as a type of shepherd dog.
