Description

This Kigango is a carved and polychrome wooden post that originated from the Giriama tribes in Kenya. It is a traditional memorial statue erected by the Mijikenda peoples of the southeastern Kenya coast to honor a dead member of the secret Gohu society, or the "Society of the Blessed". The Kigango has geometric decorations painted in white and red, showcasing the tribe's affinity for bold yet simplistic designs. Sometimes these items are referrerd to as Vigango, which is the plural of Kigango in Swahili and litterally means carved wooden post.

Aside from it representing a beautiful artistic expression, these Vigango are a gateway into understanding the depth and richness of Kenyan tribal history, culture and traditions . Crafted from hard wood, this Kigango has stood the test of time. Its robust nature is complemented by designs that are as vivid today as they were when first carved. It stands as both an artistic masterpiece and historical artifact, promising to be a source of awe and wonder for generations to come.
