Description

Discover the spiritual artistry of Michoacan with this exquisite antique Rood Cross from the 17th century, a masterpiece of Purépecha craftsmanship, hand-sculpted from traditional cornstalk paste. A Rood Cross, otherwise known as "Triumphal Cross" is a monumental representation of the crucifixion of Christ, typically placed in a prominent position within a church, such as above the chancel arch separating the nave from the main altar. These crosses symbolize Christ’s triumph over death, and hence the term "triumphal." Their presence in Christian churches, especially during the medieval and colonial periods, served as a visual reminder of the core of the Christian faith and as a devotional element that connected the faithful with the mystery of redemption.

This remarkable sculpture captures both the solemnity of the subject and the intricate artistry of its creators. The cross is adorned with elaborate rope-like patterns and floral motifs, reflecting a harmonious blend of indigenous Purépecha aesthetics and European religious iconography. The figure of Christ is rendered with striking realism, from the detailed musculature to the expressive facial features, all brought to life through meticulous polychromy.

Originating from the culturally rich region of Michoacan, Mexico, this Rood Cross is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Purépecha people. Known for their exceptional skills in creating lightweight yet durable sculptures, the Purépecha artisans have preserved this ancient technique since pre-Columbian times. After the Spanish Conquest in the 16th century, they adapted their craft to produce Catholic imagery, resulting in pieces like this that embody a unique cultural syncretism.

Crafted from cornstalk paste (a material made from the inner stalks of corn mixed with natural adhesives like orchid glue) this sculpture is not only visually stunning but also incredibly light and resilient. The use of this traditional material allowed for the creation of detailed and expressive figures that could be easily transported for religious processions, making them integral to both worship and community celebrations

As a piece of colonial Mexican art, this Rood Cross holds significant artistic and historical value. It represents the fusion of two worlds, the indigenous and the European, and stands as a symbol of the resilience and adaptability of the Purépecha culture. Such sculptures are rare and highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of Mexican folk art.

Despite its age, this antique Rood Cross remains in very good condition, with all the fingers incatc and showcasing a beautiful patina that enhances its authenticity and charm. It shows some scraping on the figure's left toes, a fe cracks near the arms and a flake on the head. These minor imperfections are a natural part of its history, adding to its character and value in the spirit of wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in the imperfect and transient. The Christ is also missing it's hair since as it was customary in the 17th century, it was made of real human hair and it has been lost due to natural deterioration. It can be substituted by a natural or artificial wig for best display effect.

Owning this piece means possessing a fragment of Mexico's rich cultural tapestry, a work of art that tells a story of faith, tradition, and artistic excellence. Please mind the size of this exceptional work of religious art, since it can only be displayed in a very large home, gallery, or place of worship. It would also make a great donation to your favorite church or temple as this Rood Cross is sure to captivate and inspire all who behold it.
