Description

This stunning lithograph titled "Perro Ladrandole a la Luna" (Dog Barking at the Moon) published in 1988 by Mexican master Rufino Tamayo is a captivating portrayal of a dog silhouetted against a moonlit sky. Tamayo, one of the most important figures in 20th century Mexican art, was a visionary artist who seamlessly blended European Modernism with the ancient artistic traditions of Mexico. His works are characterized by bold colors, expressive forms, and a deep connection to his Zapotec heritage. As a master of nuances in surface and texture, Tamayo’s legacy extends beyond painting and murals to include an impressive body of print works. His prints span seven decades, and he continually experimented with techniques to push the medium in new directions. This piece showcases his exceptional ability to create drama and emotion with a colorful palette.

The work is hand signed and numbered 19 from an edition of only 80. It was created using the lithography process, a technique that involves drawing an image with a greasy substance onto a limestone plate. The stone is then treated with water, which will repel the ink but adhere to the greasy image. The print is made by pressing the stone onto paper, transferring the ink. Lithography was a favorite technique of many Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, as it allowed for the creation of unique and expressive prints.

It was published by the Ernest F. de Soto Workshop in San Francisco, California and is included in the Tamayo Prints Catalogue Raisonné by Juan Carlos Pereda under number 333. A catalogue raisonné is a comprehensive listing of an artist's works, and inclusion indicates that the work is authentic.

Oaxaca has been a center for artistic expression in Mexico for centuries. The region is home to a wealth of indigenous traditions, which are reflected in the work of many Oaxacan artists. Tamayo was born in Oaxaca and his work is deeply influenced by its rich cultural heritage. The blend of tradition, innovation, and cultural richness makes his works highly sought after. The continued interest in Tamayo's work is a testament to the enduring appeal of Oaxacan art.

This signed and numbered lithograph is a unique opportunity to own a piece of Mexican art history. Tamayo's work is celebrated around the world, and his paintings routinely command high prices at auction. Lithograph prints are more affordable than original paintings but still offer excellent investment potential.
