Description
St Joseph & Baby Jesus Antique Religious Oil Painting Mexican Colonial
This beautiful 18th-century painting depicts "Saint Joseph and the Child Jesus." The painting is in excellent state of preservation and is a remarkable example of Mexican religious art. It is painted in a realistic style, allowing for the appreciation of the details in the faces and clothing of the figures.
Saint Joseph is depicted standing, holding the Child Jesus in his arms. The Child Jesus is smiling and looking at his father with love. The cherubs appearing at the top of the painting add a celestial touch to the image.
The attributes of Saint Joseph are the objects or symbols associated with him that identify him as the husband of the Virgin Mary and the adoptive father of Jesus. He is often depicted holding the Child Jesus in his arms, often with an expression of love and tenderness. Above the child's head, you can also find the blossoming staff. This attribute is based on an Old Testament prophecy that the Messiah would come from the family of David. In the New Testament, it is said that a staff of Saint Joseph miraculously bloomed, which was interpreted as a sign that he was chosen to be Mary's spouse. The flowers on the staff are lilies, which are associated with purity and chastity.
