Description

Antique Archbishop's Silver Pectoral Cross, a piece that symbolizes deep spiritual reverence while also serving as a testament to the rich history and culture of the Russian Orthodox tradition. Forged to commemorate the newly established style by Emperor Nicholas II in 1896, this eight-pointed cross is adorned with inscriptions in the ecclesiastical Slavic language on both its front and back, featuring the emperor’s monogram.

One of the largest, finest, and heaviest examples of these commemorative crosses, this piece bears an Imperial hallmark of sterling silver 84 and three additional hallmarks. The material composition of the cross is solid sterling silver, a choice that has allowed it to withstand the test of time and maintain its captivating luster.

The pectoral cross is worn by all bishops and archbishops of the Russian Orthodox Church. On the front, it bears the inscription INBI (which Pontius Pilate placed above Jesus’ head during the crucifixion) and the Christogram - the letters IC XC NIKA - encircling the cross’s arms and base, a symbol that means "Jesus Christ Conquers". Orthodox pectoral crosses are often fitted with gold or silver chains, with the finest ones featuring decorative links such as the case with this particular one. The reverse of the cross is inscribed with the words of Saint Paul to Saint Timothy: "Be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity" (1 Timothy 4:12).

An Archbishop’s Silver Pectoral Cross like this is a divine historical heritage, stemming from a legacy of virtue and connecting with centuries of devotion. These inscriptions inspire you to live a life aligned with Saint Paul’s advice - a life exemplified by love, faith, and purity. This cross is perfect for a devout follower of the Orthodox faith or a collector of the highest-quality religious art. It would also be a valuable addition to a fine jewelry collection, due to its style and historical significance.
