Description

Our Lady of Sorrow Dolorosa Oil on Copper Ecce Mater Tua Signed Joan 19C

This poignant oil painting, titled "Ecce Mater Tua," is a masterpiece that captures the depth of suffering and devotion. The image of the Sorrowful Virgin is presented with artistic elegance that reflects the hand of a talented painter, likely of Spanish origin. Although the signature reveals only the name "Joan," the quality of the work suggests undeniable artistic skill.

The inscription "Ecce Mater Tua" is Latin for "Behold, your mother." These words were spoken by Jesus to his disciple John as he was dying on the cross. In this context, the inscription is meant to remind viewers of Mary's role as the mother of all Christians.

Possibly dating back to 1827 due to the number 27 that appears at the end of the signature, this historical piece holds a rich heritage within. It has a small crease at the bottom left corner of the copper sheet and despite some paint layer detachments, these have been carefully stabilized with varnish in a recent conservation effort, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

The representation of the Sorrowful Virgin includes iconic elements like the crown of thorns, a bloodstained cloth, and a dagger piercing her heart, conveying profound emotion and symbolism. The painting is set on a wood frame, further emphasizing its timeless and understated beauty. Our Lady of Sorrows is a popular Catholic devotion that focuses on Mary's suffering during Jesus' Passion. The bloody shroud and crown of thorns are symbols of Jesus' death, while the dagger through Mary's heart represents her own emotional pain.

This artwork is an invaluable treasure for any art and antique collector as it not only embodies exceptional artistic craftsmanship but also tells a rich and moving story.
