Description
Jose Guadalupe Posada Historic Broadside After the Ball & Mourning Hours 1902
Antique broadside with the lyrics of the popular songs "Despues del Baile" (After the Dance), a waltz from the 19th century and "Horas de Luto" (Hours of Mourning), a song by Salvador Morlet, with etchings attributed to Jose Guadalupe Posada by Dr. Ricardo Perez Escamilla, art scholar and expert figure on Posada. The texts are the lyrics to a waltz about the end of a love affair and a sad poem about death and mourning. Printed by Antonio Vanegas Arroyo in Mexico City in the year 1903. Part of the print collection of Stanford University.
The broadsides produced by Antonio Vanegas Arrollo played a crucial role in preserving and disseminating popular songs from the late 19th century in Mexico. These publications served not only as a means of promoting cultural events and activities but also as a way to bring the music and lyrics of popular songs to a wider audience. The engravings by Jose Guadalupe Posada and Manuel Manila, in particular, added a distinctive artistic touch to these flyers, turning them into affordable works of art for the general public. Over the years, this collaboration between Vanegas Arrollo, Manila and Posada has gained immeasurable historical and cultural value, allowing us an invaluable glimpse into the diversity of songs and themes that shaped the soundtrack of life in Mexico during that era.
